Electrician - Perth

An opportunity has arisen to join the Electrical team in the Perth office as a Road Lighting Electrician.  The role requires the undertaking of cyclic and reactive repairs to electrical street furniture across the North East and North West of Scotland, occasionally requiring periods away from the operational base. You will also be expected to work within shift requirements and participate in an emergency standby rota.



The successful candidate will have completed a recognised training programme, be familiar with the standards of BS7671 and have previous experience of inspecting and maintaining private electrical supplies.

1.      Job Purpose:

To carry out electrical duties as deemed necessary as part of our Highway Electrical works in line with Highways Sector Schemes 8, 9b & 10, contract specification and business requirements.




2.      Responsibilities and Activities:

§    Comply with Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality procedures that form part of BEAR’s Management Systems.

§    Carry out site specific risk assessment.

§    Install, test and commission Highway Electrical Equipment.

§    Support and assist installation, routine maintenance and fault repair crews.

§    Participate in emergency response on a rota basis in and out of hours.




3.      Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

§    A recognised apprenticeship, NVQ/SVQ in Electrical Installation and experience in Highway Electrical industry, Construction or Electricity Supply Network.

§    An understanding of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, BS761 - 17th  Edition Wiring Regulations /  BS2391 - Electrical Test and Inspection / TR22 - ILE report on planned inspection regime of lighting columns, signs & posts, specification for highway works 1998.

§    Be conversant with G39/1 Engineering recommendations.

§    Be conversant with HS (G) 47 & GS6 Electrical Safety regarding overhead and underground cables.

§    To be able to identify the areas of work, i.e. the boundaries between public and private areas and between neighbouring local authorities.

§    Identify the varied types of Highway Electrical Equipment and components parts including a practical and theoretical understanding of the basic fundamentals of Electrical Circuits.

§    Be able to recognise the potential dangers of the electricity supply network.

§    Have an understanding of the relevant Health & Safety Legislation and Standards of competence in assessing risk.

§    Have an understanding of and adhere to good manual handling techniques.

§    Be able to administer Emergency First Aid.

§    Past evidence of assessment of units and registration of Sector Schemes and or ILE Scheme for Public Lighting units.

§     Full UK driving license.

§     Experience of working to tight deadlines and working under pressure.

§     Ability to work effectively in a team.

§     Good communication skills.

§     Ability to problem solve.

§     Flexible to working practices.

§    Capable to self manage work and self motivate.

§     Ability to cope with change.
