Traffic & Road Safety Engineer


An opportunity has arisen in the North East Unit for an Engineer in the Traffic & Road Safety Team. The Engineer will report to the Traffic & Road Safety Manager and will be responsible for the design and delivery of highway improvement designs ensuring compliance with relevant technical standards and taking into account current legislation on Health and Safety, Environment and Accessibility; liaising with clients, emergency services, local authorities and other road safety stakeholders.




The role is permanent and while the post will be predominantly office based, some site work will be required along with an element of out of hours working. Candidates should be team players who are flexible, have a can-do attitude, and have a proven track record of delivering programmes of work and meeting tight deadlines.

Engineer – Minor Improvements and Safety

Reporting To:

Traffic and Road Safety Manager



1.         Job Purpose:


§          The Engineer – Traffic and Road Safety will design road safety-related improvements schemes and traffic-related projects, assist in producing the annual Road Safety Review and assist in the Road Safety Audit, Cycling Audit and Equality Act processes.




2.         Responsibilities and Activities:


§    Comply with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated Management Systems.


§    Undertake the role of designer with respect to the CDM Regulations on behalf of the company, as required, and carry out robust risk assessments before the commencement of works, operations or inspections.


§    Assist with the liaison with clients and road safety stakeholders.


§    Liaise with relevant Police Authorities and Local Authority staff.


§    Undertake accident investigations utilising accident database and software and the design of prevention measures.


§    Prepare and oversee the preparation of feasibility and road safety reports.


§    Design road safety related improvements scheme with a construction value of up to £1m.


§    Undertake preliminary and detailed design and cost estimates.


§    Undertake cycle audits and Equality Act audits.


§    Maintain adequate design records.


§    Manage the programme for individual projects.


§    Produce and archive of drawings, documents, and scheme files.


§    Comply with technical standards of design and construction.


§    Draft  Departures from Standard, when applicable.


§    Assist senior staff as required.






3.         Knowledge, Skills and Experience:


§    Current experience/qualification in a relevant discipline, typically at degree level or HNC/HND Level. Preferably chartered or working towards MICE or MIHT.


§    Must have experience in both road safety investigation and the preparation of road schemes compliant with the Design Manual for Roads and bridges (DMRB).


§    May be required to take on the role of Road Safety Audit Team member, approved by Transport Scotland and therefore should ideally have suitable experience of accident investigation or road safety engineering as required by DMRB HD19/15.


§    Must be able to work to strict deadlines.


§    Must have commercial awareness.


§    Must have a full approved UK driving licence.
