£1.2M SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR M90 AND A90 NEAR PERTH

February 18, 2022

Works start Sunday 20 February for four weeks

Two sections of the A90 and two sections of the M90 at Barnhill are set to benefit from an improved road surface with works set to begin on Sunday 20 February.

The £1.2M investment by Transport Scotland will see sections of the carriageway resurfaced at Barnhill Circulatory, promoting better ride comfort and safer journeys for motorists.

The improvements will take approximately four weeks to complete. To ensure minimum disruption to motorists, the project will take place in phases. The intended programme of work is as follows:

  • M90 Junction 11 northbound off-slip – Sunday 20 February to Saturday 26 February

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the M90 Junction 11 northbound off-slip will be closed from 7.30pm on Sunday 20 February until 6.30am on Saturday 26 February. Motorway traffic will be diverted to the nearby Kinfauns Junction and back. Traffic from Perth wishing to join the southbound M90 will also be diverted via the Kinfauns Junction. A northbound nearside lane closure will also be in place across the M90 Friarton Bridge.

  • A90 Walnut Grove to Barnhill southbound – Sunday 27 February to Monday 7 March

For safety, a contraflow system will be in place between Walnut Grove to Junction 10 from 7.30pm on Sunday 27 February until 6.30am on Monday 7 March. Single lane traffic will be travelling in both directions on the northbound carriageway while the A90 southbound carriageway is resurfaced. The Junction 11 southbound off-slip will be closed throughout this phase of the project, with motorway traffic being diverted to Junction 9 Bridge of Earn and back. Non motorway traffic will be diverted via the local road to Walnut Grove. Preparatory operations for the installation of the contraflow will be carried prior to the works commencing.

  • M90 Junction 11 southbound on-slip – Sunday 13 March to Thursday 17 March

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the M90 Junction 11 southbound on-slip will be closed from 7.30pm on Sunday 13 March until 6.30am on Thursday 17 March. Traffic from Perth wishing to join the southbound M90 will again be diverted via the Kinfauns Junction.

  • A90 Barnhill Circulatory Westbound – Friday 18 March to Monday 21 March

From 7.30pm on Friday 18 March until 6.30am on Monday 21 March, the Barnhill Circulatory westbound (from A90 South to Perth) will be closed to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists. Traffic will be diverted to Junction 9 Bridge of Earn and back up. Bus services will be managed through the site to allow them to continue to run in this area to reduce the impact on the travelling public. Non -motorway traffic will also be accommodated at these times.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the surfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Commenting on the improvements, Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “This £1.2M investment from Transport Scotland will see works completed across busy sections of the A90 and M90 near Barnhill which will help address defects and greatly improve the road surface for motorists.

“The closures in place are necessary to protect our operatives and road users, however we’ve taken steps to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible during the improvements by programming the works to take place in phases.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
