£350,000 OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR THE A83 SOUTH OF ARROCHAR

March 15, 2022

Friday 1 April

TWO ADDITIONAL OVERNIGHT CLOSURES REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ON THE A83 SOUTH OF ARROCHAR

Please be advised that inclement weather has impacted the ongoing resurfacing works on the A83 south of Arrochar.

The project was due to be completed by Friday 1 April, however additional road closures will be required to complete resurfacing operations.

Works are expected to continue tonight, Friday 1 April, with teams then returning on Friday 8 April for one night. The works are programmed to take place between 8pm and 5am each night.

Traffic management will remain the same as originally planned, work will be carried out using a full road closure, to protect the safety of operatives and road users.  Amnesty periods will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, midnight, 2am and 4am. Motorists are encouraged to arrive at the works location prior to these times to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty periods. A diversion route will also be in operation via the A82 to Tyndrum, A85 to Dalmally and the A819 to Inveraray adding a further 25 miles and 35 minutes to journey times between Tarbet and Inveraray. The Inveraray Arch on the A819 has a height restriction of 4.57m (15’0”) hence vehicles exceeding this height should wait at the A83 closure points, where they will be stacked until the next available A83 amnesty period.

Outwith working hours, and to keep disruption to a minimum, a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place on the A83 at the work sites as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times.  Local access for residents and scheduled bus services will be maintained as far as reasonably practicable.

All relevant stakeholders have been informed of the changes.

Tuesday 15 March

Work is to begin from Sunday 20 March for ten nights

  • Overnight road closures in place for safety between 8pm and 5am

A section of the A83 between Tarbet and Arrochar is to benefit from an improved road surface with work set to get underway on Sunday 20 March.

The £350,000 project will involve teams resurfacing 1.5km of the A83 south of Arrochar, creating a safer and smoother journey for road users.

The improvements are scheduled to begin on Sunday 20 March and are programmed to take place between 8pm and 5am across ten nights, with all works expected to be completed by 5am on Friday 1 April, subject to weather conditions. No works will take place on Friday or Saturday night.

Due to the narrow road widths present at this location on the A83, work will be carried out using a full road closure, to protect the safety of operatives and road users.

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans and share information about the project in advance.

Commenting on the improvements, Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This £350,000 investment from Transport Scotland will help address any defects and will greatly improve the condition of the A83 at Arrochar for road users.

“The planned overnight closures are essential to us being able to complete the works safely given to the narrow widths of the road at this location. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project as best we can, avoiding Friday and Saturday nights, by undertaking the works overnight and by providing amnesty periods for traffic to pass through the site.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local communities and road users for their patience in advance. We encourage motorists to check the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information before commencing their journey.”
