A1 DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT WORKS, ABBOTSVIEW TO GLADSMUIR

March 13, 2024

  • Overnight lane closures for 13 Weeks from Monday 1 April 2024

  • Overnight slip road closures at Abbotsview, Oaktree and Gladsmuir Junctions

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland is to carry out drainage improvement works on the northbound carriageway of the A1 in East Lothian, beginning on the night of Monday 1 April.

Lane one of the A1 northbound carriageway will be closed between Abbotsview Junction and Gladsmuir Junction from 19:30 until 06:00 each night for thirteen weeks, on Monday to Friday nights only.

For the safety of road users and the workforce, a series of overnight slip road closures will also be required:

  • Abbotsview Junction northbound off-slip will be closed on the nights of 1-3 April. Traffic wishing to exit the A1 at Abbotsview will be directed to continue to Oaktree Junction and return southbound to exit via the Abbotsview southbound off-slip.
  • Abbotsview Junction northbound on-slip will be closed on the nights of 4-17 April (excluding weekend nights). Traffic wishing to join the A1 at Abbotsview will be directed to use the southbound on-slip and return northbound from Thistly Cross Roundabout.
  • Oaktree Junction northbound off-slip will be closed on the night of 7 May. Traffic wishing to exit the A1 at Oaktree will be directed to continue to Gladsmuir Junction and return southbound to exit via the Oaktree southbound off-slip.
  • Oaktree Junction northbound on-slip will be closed on the night of 8 May. Traffic wishing to join the A1 at Oaktree will be directed to use the southbound on-slip and return northbound from Abbotsview Junction.
  • Gladsmuir Junction northbound off-slip will be closed on the nights of 13 and 14 June. Traffic wishing to exit the A1 at Gladsmuir will be directed to continue to Bankton Junction and return southbound to exit via the Abbotsview southbound off-slip.
  • Gladsmuir Junction northbound on-slip will be closed on the nights of 21, 24, 25 and 26 June. Traffic wishing to join the A1 at Gladsmuir will be directed to use the southbound on-slip and return northbound from Oaktree Junction.

These diversion routes will add approximately 5 miles and 6 minutes to affected journeys, with the exception of the diversion for traffic wishing to join the A1 northbound at Abbotsview, which will add an estimated 17.2 miles and 16 minutes.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These drainage improvements will improve safety for motorists using the A1 in East Lothian.

“it is essential that we close lanes and slip roads while work takes place next to the carriageway, however we’ve planned the works to take place overnight to minimise any disruption.

“We’re grateful to road users for their patience and understanding.”
