A1 TYNE BRIDGE TO CLOSE DURING STORM ÉOWYN

January 23, 2025

  • Road closure between Abbotsview Junction and Thistly Cross Roundabout from 06:00 on Friday 24 January 2025

The bridge that carries the A1 trunk road over the River Tyne in East Lothian will be closed as a safety precaution from 06:00 on Friday 24 January, with winds in excess of 80mph forecast during Storm Éowyn.

A diversion route will be signposted via the A199 between Abbotsview Junction near Haddington and Thistly Cross Roundabout near Dunbar. This is expected to add approximately 4 minutes and 0.1 miles to affected journeys.

The Met Office have issued a red weather warning for wind affecting most of central and southern Scotland on Friday. This means very dangerous conditions and significant disruption.

Police Scotland are advising the public not to travel in, or to, the areas affected by the red warning during the period of the weather.

The Forth Road Bridge is also expected to close during the storm, and the Queensferry Crossing and Clackmannanshire Bridge are likely to close to high sided vehicles.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “The decision to close the A1 Tyne Bridge pre-emptively has been taken in the interests of safety in collaboration with Police Scotland and East Lothian Council.

“Winds in excess of 80mph are forecast, so with a relatively short diversion available it makes sense to eliminate the risk of vehicles being caught out by strong gusts on the bridge.

“Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous across the network. All road users should pay close attention to weather warnings and comply with restrictions and police travel advice.”
