BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, is to undertake detailed inspection works on the historic Lothian Bridge that carries the A68 trunk road over the Tyne Water in Pathhead.
This is a routine inspection undertaken every six years, which requires close access to all parts of the structure. The space required to accommodate the access equipment for such an inspection requires the A68 to be closed to ensure the safety of the workforce and the public.
To minimise disruption, the closure will take place between the hours of 21:00 and 06:00 on the night of Thursday 20 June.
A signed diversion route will be in place, with northbound traffic directed to leave the A68 at the junction with the B6367 and follow the C34 Ford Road then the B3672 north to rejoin the A68 north of Pathhead. Southbound traffic will be directed to follow the same diversion in the opposite direction. This will add an additional 0.5 miles and approximately 2 minutes to affected journeys.
Consultation has been carried out with relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans in advance.
David Bishop, BEAR Scotland Unit Bridges Manager, explains: “Regular inspection of bridges is a key part of ensuring that they are well maintained and able to continue carrying traffic for many years to come.
“The A68 must be closed to protect the safety of road users and the workforce during this detailed inspection, however we’ve planned the works to take place overnight to minimise travel disruption.
“We thank road users and the local community for their patience and understanding.”
