A68 BRIDGE WORKS SOUTH OF EARLSTON TOWN

January 17, 2025

  • Overnight road closure Friday 24 January 2025

The A68 will be closed south of Earlston between 19:30 and 06:00 on the night/morning of Friday/Saturday 24-25 January, to allow Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to resurface 188 metres of carriageway across the bridge that carries the trunk road over Leader Water.

This forms part of the ongoing major project to refurbish and replace the bridge’s bearings that has been under way since August last year.

A signed diversion route suitable for trunk road traffic will be in place between the A6105 junction and St Boswells, via the A6105, and the A6089 and A699 through Kelso. This diversion will add approximately 25 miles and 32 minutes to affected journeys.

During the works there will be no access for vehicles to the petrol station on Melrose Road in Earlston, or the adjacent premises to the south.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “Major works on Earlston Bridge have progressed well and we are now ready to renew the road surface.

“It’s essential for the safety of road users and the workforce that we close the road during these works, however we’ve scheduled them at night to minimise the impact.

“We’re grateful to motorists and local residents for their understanding.”

Consultation is being carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to share information about the works in advance.
