UPDATE: Works at Canonbie Jct are no longer scheduled for Monday 27 September and the road will remain open on this date. The works are on schedule to complete Wednesday 29 September as planned.

• Overnight weekday closures to commence Monday 20 September 2021

The A7 is set to benefit from an improved road surface, with 14 nights of resurfacing works in two locations set to begin on Monday 20 September.

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, will resurface 1.5km of carriageway, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

The Arkleton scheme is 9 miles (14.4 km) north of Langholm and the Canonbie scheme is 5.9 miles (9.5km) south of Langholm.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as the travelling public, the A7 will be closed between Canonbie and Hawick between 19:30 until 06:00 each night from Monday 20 September until Tuesday 5 October.

A diversion route will be signposted between Hawick and Canonbie via the B7201 / B6357 / A6088. This diversion will add approximately six miles and 15 minutes to affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Emergency services and other relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A7 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential that we close the road during these works to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight and at weekends to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all that we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

Strict physical distancing protocols are in place to protect teams and ensure they remain safe on site, in line with Scottish Government guidance.
