Sections of the A82 to the south of Drumnadrochit are set to benefit from an improved road surface with works set to get underway on Sunday.
The £335,000 project will see over 1km of improvements completed on the A82 near Urquhart Castle, with two sections of carriageway being resurfaced to improve ride comfort and safety for road users.
Overnight works are set to begin on Sunday 21 February and are expected to take two weeks to complete. The works will take place between 9pm and 6am each night and is due to be completed by 6am Wednesday 3 March, subject to weather conditions. No work will take place on Friday or Saturday nights.
Due to the narrow road widths throughout this location, the A82 will be closed in both directions during working hours to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists. However, as there is no suitable diversion route for this section of the A82, vehicles will be escorted through the work site using pre-set amnesty periods arranged for 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 2am and 4am. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty periods.
The A82 will be open during the daytime with a 30mph speed limit in operation to ensure vehicles can safely pass through the works on a temporary road surface.
Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Strict physical distancing protocols, in accordance with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be implemented to protect the operatives that are undertaking the works.
Commenting on the improvements, Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This £335,000 resurfacing project will greatly improve the quality and safety of these sections of the A82.
“The overnight closures are essential to the safety of roadworkers and road users given the narrow width of the road. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the works overnight and by avoiding Friday and Saturday nights.
“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we work on this project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
