UPDATE: OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR THE A83 AT DRISHAIG POSTPONED

Please be advised that planned surfacing improvements on the A83 Drishaig have been postponed.

The scheme at Drishaig is one of seven locations on the A83 set to receive an upgraded road surface over the next few weeks, with work originally due to take place tonight, Monday 22 February.  Due to the forecast inclement weather as well as the ongoing situation at the Rest and Be Thankful work at Drishaig has been postponed.

Overnight surfacing improvements on the A83 Ardishaig are still scheduled to go ahead as planned tomorrow night, Tuesday 23 February. Work was originally programmed to be carried out under a full road closure, however a 10mph convoy system will now be in place between 7pm and 5am for safety.

A full updated programme will be shared once dates are confirmed.

All relevant stakeholders have been updated and have been advised of the revised date for this project.

UPDATED £700,000 PROGRAMME OF SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS FOR SEVEN LOCATIONS ON A83 BETWEEN DRISHAIG AND RONACHAN

Works to continue on A83 from Monday 22 February over four weeks

An updated programme of surfacing improvements capturing seven sections of the A83 between Drishaig and Ronachan is set to begin from Monday following the recent cold weather and an associated increase in the number of road defects observed.

Surfacing improvements on the A83 began in January however the intended works programme was hindered by winter weather, requiring some operations to be postponed.  In response to the difficulties experienced, an updated resurfacing programme has been prepared for sections of the A83, with two further schemes added to improve the safety of the route.

The revised programme of works is as follows:

  • A83 Drishaig– Monday 22 February (one night)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 7pm and 5am.  A signed diversion route will be in place via the A82, A85 and A819, adding an additional 25 miles and 35 minutes to the journey for road users travelling between Tarbet and Inveraray.

  • A83 Ardrishaig– Tuesday 23 February (one night)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 7pm and 5am each night.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site using a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

  • A83 Corrranbuie – Wednesday 24 February to Sunday 28 February (three nights, with no work on Friday or Saturday night).

  • A83 Clachan – Monday 1 March to Wednesday 3 March (three nights)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 7pm and 5am each night.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site using a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

  • A83 Meall Mhor (north of Erines) – Thursday 4 March (one night)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 7pm and 5am each night.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site using a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

  • A83 west of A815 Junction – Sunday 7 March to Monday 15 March (seven nights, with no work on Friday or Saturday night)

A 10mph convoy system will be in place between 7pm and 5am each night.

  • A83 Tullochgorn – Wednesday 17 March to Monday 22 March (four days, with no work on Saturday or Sunday).

A 10mph convoy system will be in place between 7am and 7pm each day.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

At sites where work is proposed over multiple days, traffic management will be removed outwith working hours however a temporary 30mph speed limit will remain in place, as traffic will be travelling over a temporary surface.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance, will be in force to protect teams and ensure they remain safe at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “We’re aware of areas of deterioration that have become evident on the A83 following recent winter weather, which is why we have reprogrammed the ongoing work and brought forward additional surfacing improvements planned at Drishaig and Ardrishaig.

“It is important that we address these high priority sections first to ensure the network remains safe.  This £700,000 investment from Transport Scotland across these seven locations on the A83 will enable for a safer and smoother journey for motorists.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we work on this project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.

“Should anyone wish to report a specific trunk road defect they may do so via Transport Scotland’s Freephone Customer Care number, 0800 028 1414, or through BEAR Scotland’s website under the ‘report a defect’ function.”
