  • Temporary speed limit, eastbound lane closure and temporary traffic signals Monday 14 August-Friday 22 September

From Monday 14 August until Friday 22 September, BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s trunk road operating company, is embarking on the second phase of vital safety improvements on the A85. These improvements will focus on safeguarding motorists against potential hazards and addressing issues of verge erosion caused by tides.

Key Project Details:

Duration: 14 August – 22 September

Work Hours: Primarily 7am – 7pm, Monday to Friday

Additional Work Hours: Some evening and weekend work, coordinated around high and low tides.

Traffic Measures: Temporary speed limit, eastbound lane closure and temporary traffic signals.

The project will enhance a stretch of the A85 spanning from Kilmaronaig to Achnacloich. By addressing roadside risks and protecting against tidal verge erosion, the scheme will contribute to a safer road environment. The work will primarily occur on weekdays between 7am and 7pm. However, to optimise the safe working window between high and low tides, some evening and weekend work may be necessary. The aim is to complete the project by 22 September, making the overall duration approximately six weeks, subject to weather conditions.

To ensure the safety of both road users and workers, a temporary speed limit of 30mph will be in place and the eastbound lane will be temporarily closed with the assistance of traffic signals.

The project encompasses the installation of a new section of vehicle safety barrier. Additionally, in areas where the roadside is in close proximity to the loch shore, the verge will be repaired. Rock armour will be utilised to protect the verge against the impact of tides. These efforts complement prior works undertaken on the A85 in the last 18 months.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said, “Road safety remains a paramount concern for both BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland. Our scheme not only bolsters road safety but also incorporates measures to mitigate ongoing verge damage and potential road risks. This builds upon the preceding work on the A85, making it a safer route for all.

“Temporary traffic management measures are essential to safeguard our workforce and road users. By scheduling the works for the later summer period, we aim to minimize disruptions. Our teams are committed to completing the project efficiently and securely, while also reducing inconvenience for the local community.”
