**UPDATE: SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS FOR A87 NORTH OF PORTREE RESCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON THURSDAY 15 APRIL**

Please be advised that the overnight surfacing improvements on the A87 north of Portree have been rescheduled to begin on Thursday night for five nights.

The project was due to get underway last month however was postponed due to operational reasons and inclement weather.

The improvements are now scheduled to start on Thursday 15 April and will take up to five nights to complete. The project will take place between 7pm and 7am each night with surfacing due to be completed by 7am Thursday 22 April, subject to weather conditions. No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday night.

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A87, work will be carried out with a full road closure in place to ensure the safety of operatives and road users alike. As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be implemented at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 2am, 4am and 6am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site using a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty periods.

The A87 will be open during the daytime, with a 30mph speed limit in place to ensure vehicles can safely pass through the works site on a temporary road surface.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

All relevant stakeholders have been made aware of the rescheduled dates.

£230,000 OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

Works set to begin on Thursday 25 March for five nights

  • Overnight road closures in place for safety, 7pm to 7am

A section of the A87 north of Portree on the Isle of Skye is set to benefit from an improved road surface with works set to get underway this week.

The £230,000 project will see over one kilometre of the A87 resurfaced between Portree and Drumuie, creating a smoother and safer journey for road users.

The improvements are scheduled to start on Thursday 25 March and will take up to five nights to compete. The project will take place between 7pm and 7am each night with surfacing due to be completed by 7am on Thursday 1 April.  No work is programmed for Saturday or Sunday night.

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A87, work will be carried out using a full road closure to ensure the safety of operatives and road users alike.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in accordance with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be implemented to protect operatives, such that they remain safe at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This surfacing project north of Portree will greatly improve the quality and safety for road users at this section of the A87.

“The overnight closures are necessary in order to protect operatives and road users given the narrow width of the carriageway. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight and providing amnesty periods for traffic.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
