Essential maintenance is planned for the overbridge which carries Abbey Road over the A9 at Auchterarder with work due to get underway next month.

The project will involve teams upgrading the current safety barrier system on the overbridge ensuring the structure continues to operate safely for years to come.

The essential maintenance is scheduled to start on Monday 8 March and will take place over three weeks with all work expected to be completed by Friday 26 March.

The overbridge will remain open throughout the project, however there will be three-way temporary traffic lights in place as well as a reduced speed limit of 30mph for safety. The A9 will be unaffected during the work and will remain open.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be in place to ensure all site personnel remain safe.  Safe operating procedures and risk assessments have been developed to ensure teams are kept safe throughout the project.

Consultation has been carried out with Transport Scotland, Perth and Kinross Council, emergency services, community councils and transport operators to inform them of the project in advance.

Commenting on the upcoming project, BEAR Scotland North East Representative Ian Stewart said: “This essential bridge maintenance project will allow our teams to carry out the replacement of the safety barrier system on Abbey Road Overbridge to ensure the bridge continues to operate safely.

“The planned traffic management is essential to keep everyone safe during this project, however our teams will do all they can to complete the work as quickly and safely as they can to minimise disruption.

“We encourage all road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website before they travel and allowing some extra time to reach their destination.”
