Essential overnight road marking improvements on the A9 single carriageway and dual carriageway between Pitlochry and Killiecrankie will get underway on Monday night 6 November for 10 weeks.
The Road Marking improvement works commencing on Monday night 6 November will be to remove and replace all the white lines and studs for a total of 8km of the A9 carriageway. This is between the southern Pitlochry Junction and the start of the Pass of Killiecrankie dual carriageway at Faskally on the single carriageway section, and then on the dual carriageway section following from that through the Pass of Killiecrankie. This work will create safer journeys for motorists with a clearer road layout using higher reflective white lines and studs.
All Road Marking improvements within these two sections will look to be completed by 6am on Saturday 27 January 2024.
There will be no works on Saturday or Sunday nights and no works over the Christmas/New Year period between Friday 22 December and Sunday 7 January 2024.

A9 Pitlochry to Faskally Single Carriageway (Lining/Stud Refresh):
From Monday night 6 November to Saturday morning 9 December, between 7pm and 6am, the A9 single carriageway between the southern Pitlochry Junction and the dual section at Faskally will be subject to night time two-way Traffic Lights with Convoy. A reduced speed limit along with the temporary traffic lights will be setup on the approach to the site and traffic will be guided through the works, at 10mph, by a convoy vehicle. Junctions through the scheme extents will either be controlled manually by an operative or by a third traffic light signal to control traffic joining the A9 within the traffic management extents.
During the works programme, there will be a requirement to close the northern Pitlochry Junction A924 Slip Roads (northbound and southbound) to safely refresh the lining and studs. A signed diversion route will be in place to guide motorists around the closures to continue their journey. Advanced warning signs will be installed at each slip road to communicate dates and times of when each slip road will be closed.
A9 Killiecrankie to Faskally Duals – Northbound and Southbound (Lining/Stud Refresh):
From Monday night 11 December to Friday morning 22 December and from Monday night 8 January 2024 to Saturday morning 27 January 2024, between 7pm and 6am, the A9 Pass Of Killiecrankie dual carriageway will be subject to two forms of traffic management.
For the single to dual transitions at each end, these areas will be subject to night time two-way traffic lights with convoy. For the dual carriageway section northbound and southbound, this will be subject to lane closures with temporary traffic lights with convoy.
A reduced speed limit along with the temporary traffic lights will be setup on the approach to the site and traffic will be guided through the works, at 10mph, by the convoy vehicle.
Junctions through the scheme extents will either be controlled manually by an operative or by a third traffic light signal to control traffic joining the A9 within the traffic management extents.
The traffic management will be lifted after each shift. Outwith the working hours there will be no traffic management.
Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “These Road Marking Refresh projects on the A9 will help address defects and greatly improve the safety and visual impact for motorists.
Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
