Road users on the A9 in Thurso are set to benefit from an improved road surface as a £405,000 surfacing project is set to get underway on Sunday 11 October.
The project will see more than a kilometre of the A9 from south of Thurso Cemetery to the bridge at Bridgend Filling Station resurfaced, creating a smoother and safer journey for road users as well reducing the audible impact on surrounding residential areas.
The overnight surfacing improvements are scheduled to begin on Sunday 11 October and are expected to take up to ten nights to complete. The project will be carried out between 8pm and 7am each night with work due to be completed by 7am Friday 23 October. No work is programmed for Friday or Saturday nights.
To keep roadworkers as well as road users safe during the project, a 10mph convoy system will be in place over the extent of the works site whilst operations are being undertaken. Traffic management will be removed outwith working hours, however a 30mph speed limit will be in place as traffic will be travelling over a temporary surface.
During the project there will be various access restrictions to side streets and accesses that join the A9. Signs will be in place in advance of and during the works to advise motorists of any potential disruption.
Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Consultation has been undertaken with local residents, businesses, the local authority and emergency services to make them aware of the works and the traffic management arrangements that will be in place.
Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This £405,000 surfacing project will upgrade the existing road surface on the A9 through Thurso, greatly improving the quality and safety for road users.
“We’ve taken steps to help minimise disruption for road users as much as possible during the project including carrying out the improvements overnight. We’ve also planned for noisier operations to take place before 11pm each night. The traffic management in place is essential for ensuring the safety of road workers and road users, however our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible.
“We thank motorists for their patience in advance and would encourage them to plan their journeys before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
