A90 SOUTH TARBRAX TO KIRRIEMUIR JUNCTION

£390,000 SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

Works start Monday 15 February

A section of the A90 north of Dundee is set to benefit from major surfacing improvements worth £390,000 with work set to get underway from Monday.

The improvements will address defects in the road surface on the southbound section of the A90 between South Tarbrax Farm and the A928 Kirriemuir Junction, creating a safer and smoother road surface for motorists.

The project is scheduled to start on Monday 15 February and will take place over six days using 24-hour working with all improvements expected to be completed by 6.30am on Saunday 21 February, subject to weather conditions. To allow these works to be carried out in a safe and efficient manner restrictions will be required on the network as follows:

  • Monday 15 February – Overnight lane closures will be in place for safety on both the northbound and southbound carriageways to allow for traffic management to be installed ahead of the project.

  • Tuesday 16 February to Sunday 21 February – To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, a contraflow system will be in place between South Tarbrax Farm until the Nether Finlarg Junction from 7.30am on Tuesday 16 February until 6.30am on Sunday 21 February.   Single lane traffic will be travelling on the northbound carriageway while the A90 southbound carriageway is resurfaced. The North Tarbrax, Happas and Nether Finlarg junctions and crossovers will be closed to southbound traffic during the works, however a signed diversion will be in place to guide motorists to their destinations for each junction closure.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance, will be in place to ensure all site personnel remain safe once the project gets underway.  New safe operation procedures and risk assessments have also been developed to ensure teams are kept safe throughout the project.

Commenting on the improvements, Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “This £390,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this section of the A90, as well as create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible during the improvements, including carrying out the works under a contraflow traffic management system which will keep the traffic moving.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these essential improvements on the A90. We encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”

Real-time journey planning information can be obtained by visiting www.trafficscotland.org, twitter at @trafficscotland or via the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.
