£800,000 SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

Works start Wednesday 7 October for six days

A section of the A90 at Stonehaven is set to benefit from resurfacing improvements starting from tomorrow.

The £800,000 improvements will address defects in the road surface on the southbound section of the A90 between the A957 Overbridge and Mill of Forest, creating a safer and smoother road surface for motorists.

The project is planned to take place over six days using 24-hour working with all improvements expected to be completed by 6.30am Wednesday 14 October. To allow these works to be carried out in safe and efficient manner restrictions will be required on the network as follows;

• Wednesday 7 October – Overnight lane closures on both the northbound and southbound carriageway will be in place between 7.30pm and 6.30am to allow for traffic management to be installed ahead of the project.

• Friday 9 October to Wednesday 14 October – To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, a contraflow system will be in place starting after the Cowie/B979 on-slip and ending at Mill of Forest from 6.30am Friday 9 October until 6.30am Wednesday 14 October. Signed diversion routes will be in place for all affected junctions.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government guidance, will be in place to ensure all site personnel remain safe once the project gets underway.  New safe operation procedures and risk assessments have also been developed to ensure teams are kept safe throughout the project.

Commenting on the improvements, Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “This £800,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this section of the A90, as well as create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“We’ve changed our ways of working to ensure all staff and the local community are kept safe at all times during the current Covid-19 pandemic, and all personnel will be subject to strict physical distancing protocols in line with Scottish Government guidance.  Thorough risk assessments have been developed and cleansing stations have been implemented on site to ensure all staff remain safe.

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible during the improvements, including carrying out the works under a contraflow traffic management system which will keep the traffic moving.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these essential improvements on the A90. We encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”
