Safety improvements

The £2 million investment from Transport Scotland will see structural strengthening within all four steel towers on Kessock Bridge which will ensure the iconic structure continues to meet loading standards for major bridges in years to come and improve access inside the towers for our teams. These works will also involve installing new anemometers to measure wind speed and aid bridge management during stormy conditions.

Footway/cycleway closure

Due to the nature of the works, single footway/cycleway closures will be in place to protect road workers and the public. A diversion will be in place to safely direct pedestrians and cyclists to the opposite footway/cycleway.

Our team will start working on the northbound footway/cycleway which will be closed from January until June 2025. Afterwards, work on the southbound footway/cycleway will continue until the end of October 2025. The carriageway will remain fully open in both directions during the day.

Overnight carriageway closures

There will also be intermittent overnight lane closures from 7pm to 6am on a single lane on the A9 dual carriageway over Kessock Bridge for material deliveries. Additional overnight closure may be required.

Span 13 Painting

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland are set to carry out painting work on Kessock Bridge from Monday 17 February.

This £1.5 million investment from Transport Scotland will see the existing paint coatings on a section at the north end of the bridge removed, and a new protective paint applied onto the steelwork, helping to protect the structural steel and maintain the integrity of the bridge for years to come.

Specialist subcontractors will be carrying out the work between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Sunday for the duration of the project, which is expected to take 22 weeks. From late March into April, some regular overnight work will be required to allow the team to clean up the old paint coatings.

No delays or disruptions are expected for people using the A9 across the Kessock Bridge, however, there will be an increase in site-related traffic in North Kessock from Millbank Road to Point Road and into the North Kessock compound under the bridge. The current cycleway/footway restrictions on Kessock Bridge are due to the ongoing safety improvement works, and a diversion is in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the bridge improvements to make them aware of the increase in site-related traffic and noise levels.
