CORING INVESTIGATION WORKS ON THE A720

September 9, 2021

  • Weekday overnight slip road closures 13-17 September 2021

A series of overnight slip road closures will be in place on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass on the nights of 13-17 September. This is to allow Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to carry out coring investigation works in advance of future resurfacing.

The following closures and diversion routes will be in place between 20.30 and 06.00 each night:

  • On the night of 13 September, the eastbound on-slip to the A720 at Baberton Junction will be closed. A diversion will be signposted via the B701 (Wester Hailes Road) and A71 (Calder Road), adding an estimated 4 minutes to affected journeys.
  • On the night of 14 September, the eastbound on-slip to the A720/A71 from the Hermiston Gait Roundabout will be closed. A diversion will be signposted via the A720 westbound, Gogar Roundabout and the A720 eastbound, adding an estimated 5 minutes to affected journeys.
  • On the nights of 15 & 16 September, the westbound slip road onto the A720/M8 from Calder Junction will be closed, as well as the slip road onto the A720 from the M8 eastbound. A diversion will be signposted via the A720 eastbound, Dreghorn Junction and A720 Westbound, adding an estimated 9 minutes to affected journeys.
  • On the night of 17 September, eastbound off-slip from the A720 to Hermiston Gait Roundabout/M8/A71 will be closed. A diversion will be signposted via the A720 eastbound, Dreghorn Junction and the A720 Westbound, adding an estimated 9 minutes to affected journeys

All traffic management will be removed during the daytime and access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These carriageway investigation works are an essential part of the design and planning of future resurfacing improvements on these sections of the A720.

“The planned traffic management is to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, however to help minimise delays we’ve scheduled the works to take place during night-time hours.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these investigations.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website www.trafficscotland.org for up to date travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
