DECK REPAIRS ON BRIDGE CARRYING A84 OVER M9

March 3, 2025

  • Overnight closure of A84 in both directions 22 April 2025

Refurbishment works on the bridge carrying the A84 trunk road over the M9 motorway at Junction 10 Craigforth are set to commence on 22 April.

The works will consist of repairs to the deck, replacement of the joints and resurfacing of the carriageway, and will be carried out under a single lane closure of the A84 with two-way temporary traffic lights for approximately 10 weeks.

To allow temporary safety barriers to be installed at the start of the works, a full closure of the bridge will be required between 19:00 and 06:00 on the night of Tuesday 22 April. Signed diversion routes will be in place:

  • Road users heading east on the A84 will be diverted onto the M9 northbound to turn at Junction 11 Keir Roundabout, returning southbound to exit via the Junction 10 off-slip. This diversion will add approximately 6 miles and 7 minutes to affected journeys.
  • Road users heading west on the A84 will be diverted onto the M9 southbound to turn at Junction 9 Pirnhall, returning northbound to join the A84 via the Junction 10 off-slip. This diversion will add approximately 10 miles and 11 minutes to affected journeys.
  • A separate diversion route for traffic not permitted to use the motorway will be signposted via the A84, the A811 and the B8075.

The footways across the bridge will also be closed, with a diversion route for cyclists and pedestrians signposted via a path to the north of the bridge.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the works.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The deck of the bridge carrying the A84 over the M9 at Craigforth requires refurbishment to ensure it continues to provide safe and reliable service.

“It’s essential for the safety of road users and our workforce that we close the bridge while temporary safety barriers are installed, however we’ve scheduled these works at night in order to minimise the impact.

“If you need to use this route on the night of Tuesday 22 April, our advice is to plan ahead and allow some extra time for your journey.

“Two further overnight bridge closures will be required later in the project. We’ll announce details of these as soon as dates are confirmed.”

All works are weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
