• Footway improvements and new pedestrian crossing at Buccleuch Road

• Temporary traffic lights for four weeks commencing 26 February 2024

Works to improve pedestrian and cycle access along the A7 Buccleuch Road in Hawick are due to commence on Monday 26 February for four weeks.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out a number of improvements, including widening and realigning the existing footway to allow shared use with cyclists, civil engineering works to allow a new pedestrian crossing to be installed, and improvements to carriageway drainage.

Buccleuch Road will be restricted to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights for the duration of these works.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Further works will be required at a future date to resurface the carriageway and apply new road markings on the approaches to the new pedestrian crossing.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These works will improve safety for pedestrian and cyclists travelling along this stretch of the A7 in Hawick.

“A lane closure with temporary traffic lights is required for the safety of road users and our workforce, however the route will remain open and we don’t expect this to cause significant delays.

“We will return at a future date to complete resurfacing and road markings for the new pedestrian crossing and will share details of these additional works as soon as timings are confirmed.”
