IMPROVEMENTS DELIVERED IN NORTH WEST SCOTLAND – Q2 2024

July 22, 2024

Between April and June 2024, Transport Scotland invested a total of £19.1million on the North West trunk road network.

A range of planned works, routine maintenance, bridge and road improvements have been carried out throughout the second quarter of the year.

New surface for A82 Tomnahurich swing bridge

In June, the deck waterproofing and surfacing on Tomnahurich swing bridge was successfully replaced along a central strip of the deck.
This strip had previously been failing and required replacement to prevent potholes from forming.

The works were carried out overnight using a full closure of the bridge and a local diversion over the adjacent Torvean Swing Bridge. Each night, the bridge had to be left in a condition such that it could be swung during the day to allow the passage of canal boat traffic. Therefore, waste material was stockpiled on the bridge deck to keep the bridge in balance during swings.

Scotland’s first Mageba Polyflex PA80 expansion joint

Following noise complaints, works to replace both expansion joints on the A9 1885 Dunbeath bridge was completed in June. The expansion joint, the first of its kind used in Scotland, boasts low noise emission properties and also accommodates large thermal movements.

£1,175,000 investment for A9

A 1140m stretch of the A9 recently benefitted from a £1,175,000 investment. The project involved Partial Reconstruction treatment at 340mm, drainage improvements, and refreshing road markings to improve road safety and driving conditions. Works were carried out under nighttime lane closures with a convoy to minimise disruption.
