KEEPING SOUTH EAST TRUNK ROADS SAFE IN WINTER STORMS AND SNOW

March 28, 2022

BEAR Scotland’s winter team has been working tirelessly these past few months to keep trunk routes in the South East safe and clear, spreading 13,640 tonnes of salt on roads, spraying 530 tonnes of liquid de-icer onto major bridge structures, and clearing an estimated 300 trees during storms.

Winter service began in October, when heavy and persistent rain was affecting the South of Scotland. Since then, there have been six named storms – with Storm Arwen causing the greatest destruction to the area – and road surface temperatures have reached lows of -8°C.

Faced with challenging weather conditions including ice, rain, wind and snow, our dedicated team and their fleet of winter maintenance vehicles have responded quickly and efficiently in all scenarios, managing them in a way that causes as little disruption as possible for the travelling public.
