Overnight works to clean the roof and certify the fall arrest system on the footbridge over the M8 at Harthill Services are set to begin on 23 October 2023.
Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the project over six nights – three nights on the westbound carriageway and three nights on the eastbound carriageway.
For the safety of workers and road users, the westbound M8 will be closed at Junction 4A Heartlands on the nights of 23, 24 and 25 October, between 21:00 and 05:00. A diversion route will be signposted via the B7066 and the B7057 to M8 Junction 5 Shotts, adding an estimated 0.1 miles and 3 minutes to affected journeys.
The eastbound M8 will then be closed at Junction 5 Shotts on the nights of 30, 31 October and 1 November, again between 21:00 and 05:00. A diversion route will be signposted via the B7057 and the B7066 to M8 Junction 4A Heartlands, adding an estimated 0.7 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.
Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “For safety it’s going to be necessary to close the M8 in one direction at a time while we carry out maintenance work on the footbridge over the carriageway.
“We’ve scheduled this work at night in order to minimise disruption, however if you do need to travel at these times please plan ahead and allow a few extra minutes for your journey.
“We’re grateful to road users for their patience and understanding.”
Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.
BEAR Scotland is leading this project as part of its responsibility for the South East Trunk Road Network on behalf of Transport Scotland.
