OLD MILITARY ROAD LOCAL DIVERSION FOR A83 REST AND BE THANKFUL

August 4, 2024

  • A83 local diversion from 6pm on Sunday 4 August

In response to the wet weather forecast, BEAR Scotland will be diverting traffic at the Rest and Be Thankful onto the Old Military Road from 6pm this evening (Sunday 4 August) as a precaution. A decision will be made about returning traffic to the A83 trunk road on the morning of Tuesday 6 August.

It is forecast that very heavy rain will fall during this period. Use of this local diversion will protect road users and maintain traffic flow along the A83 corridor ensuring access to and from Argyll.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “The forecast for heavy rain at the Rest and be Thankful will significantly increase saturation levels on the hillside.

“While we closely monitor the situation, we’ve decided to use the Old Military Road local diversion route as a proactive safety measure. Safety remains the priority and the use of this route  will ensure the A83 corridor remains open for the travelling public, keeping Argyll very much open for business.

“Subject to the weather improving, we plan to inspect the hillside thoroughly on Tuesday morning and this will inform a decision to return traffic to the A83.”
