ONGOING PEDESTRIAN CROSSING PROJECT ON THE A82 IN INVERNESS ENTERING FINAL PHASE

July 2, 2021

Overnight road closures required on Wednesday 7 July, Thursday 8 July & Friday 9 July, 7pm – 7am

The third phase of a road safety project on the A82 in Inverness is set to enter the final stage next week.

The third phase of these works began in April and has involved teams working to improve the junction of Kenneth Street/Tomnahurich Street by upgrading the traffic signals and installing controlled crossings over all four approaches of the junction. Once complete, the project will provide safer facilities for pedestrians crossing Tomnahurich Street and improve the location for all road users.

The final phase of the project will involve teams upgrading the road surface within the junction area with high grip material. This phase of the project is expected to get underway on Wednesday 7 July and will take place over three nights between 7pm and 7am each night.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, a full road closure of the junction will be in place during working hours with signed diversions. Temporary parking restrictions on both sides of the A82 on Tomnahurich Street from Planefield Road to Kenneth Street will also be place overnight. Access for residents will be maintained wherever possible, however residents will require to park outwith the closure points in the surrounding area. Alternative parking is available in Ardross Street and the surrounding area.

All noisy onsite operations will be completed by 11pm each night to help minimise disturbance for local residents.

The A82 will remain fully open during the daytime however traffic will be travelling over a temporary road surface.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be in place to protect site personnel and the public for the duration of the project.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “We are pleased to be entering the final phase of this pedestrian crossing project on the A82 through Inverness.

“Road safety is a top priority for BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland, and the scheme on the A82 at the junction of Kenneth Street / Tomnahurich Street in Inverness is part of our commitment to improving pedestrian facilities on the trunk road network.

“This junction improvement will provide the local community with safe crossing points at this busy junction of the A82.  Implementation of this third project will support more active journeys in the area.

“The traffic management arrangements are essential for the protection of our workforce and road users and pedestrians, however we’ve arranged these works to take place overnight when it is generally less busy. Due to the nature of the works, a road closure is required to ensure it is completed safely and in the shortest possible time. Our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and as safely as possible and minimise delays and inconvenience to the local community.

“We would like to thank motorists and residents around the junction for their continued patience during this project and advise them to plan ahead by checking Traffic Scotland for up to date journey information and leave some extra time to reach their destination as some delays are anticipated.”
