OVERNIGHT CLOSURES OF A899 and M8 JUNCTION 3 EASTBOUND ON-SLIP

July 9, 2024

  • Bridge works 13 and 14 July 2024

The A899 will be closed in both directions between Livingston East Roundabout and Dechmont Roundabout between 22:00 and 06:00 on the nights of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July, with access to the M8 Junction 3 eastbound on-slip also being closed as a result.

These closures are required for Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to complete the latest phase of major maintenance works on the bridge that carries the M8 Junction 3 eastbound off-slip over the A899.

Earlier this year temporary props to allow the bridge deck to be jacked up were installed and the existing bearings have now been replaced. These temporary props now need to be removed, however the A899 below the bridge must be fully closed in both directions during the lifting operation, in the interests of road user safety.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager explains: “Works to maintain the structural integrity of this bridge are progressing well.

“It is essential for safety that the A899 is closed during the removal of the temporary props, however we’ve planned these works to take place overnight to minimise travel disruption.

“We thank the local community for their ongoing patience.”

A diversion route for A899 traffic will be signposted via Livingston Road, Houston Road, Deans Road and the A89, which will add 6 miles and approximately 12 minutes to journey times.

Traffic intending to join the M8 eastbound from the A899 will be diverted via Livingston Road, Houston Road and Deans Road, from where they can choose to take the A89 eastwards towards M8 Junction 2 or the A89 westwards to join the M8 at Junction 3A.

Consultation has been carried out with relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans in advance.
