  • 12 nights of works from 10 – 24 June 2024

Transport Scotland’s operating company, BEAR Scotland, will undertake 12 nights of carriageway improvement works on the A1 at two locations between 10 and 24 June.

Works will take place between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00 each night with diversion routes in place.

The closure extents have been extended to incorporate further essential maintenance on the A1 trunk road. This will allow for the delivery of a greater programme of works during the same period, avoiding the need for further additional closures on separate dates. Alongside resurfacing works, other key maintenance works will take place including litter picking, grass cutting, gully emptying, catchpit cleaning, weed spraying, road sweeping, pothole patching, inspection of structures and repairs to signs.

Overnight road closures will be in place as follows:

  • Monday 10 to Friday 14 June and Monday 17 June – The A1 will be closed northbound between Eyemouth and Tower Farm, with a diversion route signposted following the A1107. This diversion will add nine minutes and 1.2 miles onto affected journeys.
  • Monday 17 to Friday 21 June – The A1 northbound will be closed between Gladsmuir and Wallyford, with a diversion route via the A199 through Tranent and the A6094. This diversion will add approximately 0.7 miles and  12 minutes to affected journeys.
  • Thursday 20 to Friday 21 June – The A1 northbound will be closed between Dolphingstone and Old Craighall, with a diversion route via the A199 and A6094 through Wallyford and Whitecraig, followed by the A68 at Salters Junction to the A720 City Bypass. Road users can then take the A720 to the Old Craighall Junction. This diversion will add approximately 1.7 miles and 8 minutes to affected journeys.
  • Monday 24 June – The A1 northbound will be closed between Dolphingstone and Wallyford, with a diversion route via the A199 and A6094, rejoining the A1 at Wallyford Northbound On-slip. This diversion will add approximately 0.3 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will enhance the driving experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
