OVERNIGHT RESURFACING WORKS ON M8 AT JUNCTION 4A EASTBOUND

February 14, 2023

  • Eight overnight closures between 23 February and 6 March (excluding weekends)

A section of the eastbound M8 prior to junction 4A Heartlands is set to benefit from £680,000 of resurfacing improvements.

The resurfacing works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company, BEAR Scotland resurface 1,500 metres of carriageway, creating safer journeys for motorists.

For the safety of workers and road users the works take place over eight nights between the hours of 20:30 and 06:00 starting 20:30 Thursday 23 February and finishing by 0600 on Tuesday 7 March. No works shall take place on weekends.

The works have been split up into two phases:

  • Phase 1 The eastbound M8 between junction 5 and junction 4A will be closed overnights between Thursday 23 February to Friday 24 February with a signed diversion for traffic travelling eastbound via junction 5, B7057 and the B7066 before re-joining the M8 eastbound at junction 4A.
  • Phase 2 The eastbound M8 between junction 5 and junction 4 will be closed overnight between Monday 27 February to Monday 6 March (No works on weekend)  with a signed diversion for traffic travelling eastbound via junction 5, B7057, B7066, A706 and the A801 before re-joining the M8 eastbound at junction 4.

Due to the depth of construction,  a lane two closure will remain in place on Thursday 2 March to allow adequate cooling time for the new road surface. The one lane closure will be in place Friday 3 March.

To ensure two lanes are in operation at all times, the hard-shoulder will be used with the closure of the M8 junction 4A eastbound on-slip during these times. Traffic intending to use the M8 junction 4A eastbound on-slip during this period shall be diverted via B7066, A706 and the A801 before re-joining the M8 eastbound at junction 4.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will significantly improve safety for motorists on this section of the M8.

“Road closures are essential to ensure the safety of workers and road users, however we’ve planned the works to take place overnight to minimise disruption and will do all we can to complete the project as quickly as possible.”
