UPDATE: Following earlier delays due to weather, one additional night is required on this scheme and the works will now conclude on the night of Thursday 2 May.

  • 18 nights of works from 8 April to 1 May 2024

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, will be carrying out essential surfacing improvements on three sections of the A1, with works set to get underway on Monday 8 April.

The project is scheduled to take place over 18 nights, from Monday 8 April to Wednesday 1 May, between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00. No work will take place on a Saturday or Sunday.

Works are planned at the following locations:

A1 Gladsmuir Southbound On-slip and Gladsmuir Southbound Mainline – Works will take place between Monday 8 to Monday 22 April. The A1 will be closed Southbound, and a signed diversion will be in place via Bankton junction. It will follow the A198, B1377, A6137 and A199, rejoining at Abbotsview junction southbound on-slip. This diversion will add 9 minutes and 2.2 miles onto effected journeys.

Local traffic utilising Coal Road at Gladsmuir Junction will be diverted via the A199 and rejoin the A1 at Oaktree NB On-slip. This diversion will add 3 minutes and 0.5 miles onto affected journeys.

A1 Bankton to Macmerry – Works will take place from Tuesday 23 April to Wednesday 1 May.

Emergency services will be given access throughout the works at all times. Local access for residents will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the works.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

Real time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland at www.traffic.gov.scot, or on X at @trafficscotland.

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
