OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR A82 AT LOCH ACHTRIOCHTAN NEAR GLENCOE

March 1, 2022

Monday 28 March

FURTHER OVERNIGHT CLOSURES REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SECOND PHASE OF SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ON A82 AT LOCH ACHTRIOCHTAN

Please be advised that further overnight surfacing improvements are planned for the A82 near Glencoe, which will help create a smoother and safer journey for road users.

The project will involve teams returning to conduct additional surfacing improvements at Loch Achtriochtan, from Monday 28 March for four nights. The first phase of works in this area was completed earlier this month.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the surfacing operations will be carried out using a full road closure between 8pm and 5am. A signed diversion route will be in place via the A82, A828 and A85 adding an additional 45 minutes onto journey times between Tyndrum and Ballachullish. Due to there being a height restriction of 4.2m (13’9”) on the A828 at Connel Bridge, amnesties will also be implemented at 9pm, 10pm, midnight, 2am and 4am on the A82.  During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site using a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty periods.

The A82 will be open during the daytime with a 30mph speed limit in operation such that vehicles can safely pass through the works on a temporary road surface.

Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times.

FURTHER OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR A82 NEAR GLENCOE

  • New £650,000 project west of Alnafeadh to commence 2 March, following immediately after resurfacing at Loch Achtriochtan

  • Overnight road closures will be implemented for safety, 8pm – 5am excluding Friday and Saturday nights

Please be advised that further overnight surfacing improvements are planned for the A82 near Glencoe, which will help create a smoother and safer journey for road users.

The £650,000 project, west of Alnafeadh, will follow the ongoing surfacing project at Loch Achtriochtan and will see a further two kilometre section of the A82 improved over 15 nights, creating a smoother and safer route for road users.

The project was brought forward within the surfacing programme for the A82 after sections of the route started to deteriorate rapidly.

Works are programmed as follows:

  • A82 Loch Achtriochtan – Tuesday 1 March (one night)

Traffic management will remain the same as originally planned, with a road closure being implemented between 8pm and 5am. A signed diversion route will be in place via the A82, A828 and A85, adding an additional 45 minutes onto journey times between Tyndrum and Ballachullish.

  • A82 west Alnafeadh – Wednesday 2 March to Tuesday 22 March (15 nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights)

It is anticipated that a second phase of surfacing improvements will take place on the A82 at Loch Achtriochtan once works are completed on the A82 west of Alnafeadh. A further update will be shared once dates for the second phase of works are confirmed.

Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “We have brought forward the surfacing work planned on the A82 west of Alnafeadh due to recent cold weather impacting the road surface at this location, causing it to break up sooner than anticipated.  The works will follow our current re-surfacing operations at Loch Achtriochtan and will remove the need for further closures later in the year.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance whilst we re-surface the A82 at this location. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”

ADVERSE WEATHER IMPACTS ONGOING SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ON THE A82 AT LOCH ACHTRIOCHTAN NEAR GLENCOE

Please be advised that the adverse weather associated with Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice has impacted ongoing resurfacing works on the A82 at Loch Achtriochtan.

The project was due to be completed by Friday 18 February, but the severe weather means that additional road closures will be required to complete resurfacing operations.

Works are expected to get back underway from Monday 21 February for eight nights, with all works now due to be completed by 5am on Thursday 3 March, subject to weather conditions. The works are programmed to take place between 8pm and 5am each night, with no works planned for Friday or Saturday nights.

Traffic management will remain the same as originally planned, with a road closure being implemented during working hours. A signed diversion route will be in place via the A82, A828 and A85, adding an additional 45 minutes onto journey times between Tyndrum and Ballachullish.

The A82 will be open during the daytime with a 30mph speed limit in operation to ensure vehicles can safely pass through the works on a temporary road surface. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Due to delays experienced at this location, the project will overlap with road closures planned for maintenance works on the A82 Laggan Swing Bridge. However, as the distance between the two schemes is substantial, minimal disruption is expected. The bridge maintenance works are scheduled to begin on Monday 21 February for five nights.

Motorists travelling from the east towards Skye are asked to plan their journey such that they are not impacted by both closures.

All relevant stakeholders have been informed of the changes.
