A section of the A82 south of Kingshouse is to benefit from an improved road surface with work set to get underway on Wednesday 25 May.
The project will see improvements completed over 600 metre section of the A82, creating a safer and smoother journey for road users.
The overnight project is programmed to begin on Wednesday 25 May and is expected to take five nights to complete. The improvements will take place between 8pm and 5am each night but no work will be undertaken on Friday or Saturday nights. The works are expected to be complete by 5am Wednesday 1 June, subject to weather conditions.
Due to the narrow road widths at this location on the A82, work will be carried out using a full road closure to provide a suitably safe working area. A signed diversion route will be in place via the A82, A828 and A85 adding an additional 45 minutes to the journey for road users travelling between Tyndrum and Ballachullish. However, to minimise disruption to road users, amnesty periods (when work is suspended) will be provided on the A82 at 9pm, 10pm, midnight, 2am and 4am when waiting traffic will be escorted safely through the roadworks. Road users are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty periods.
Road users are advised that there is a height restriction of 4.2m (13’9’’) on the diversion route at Connel Bridge. Vehicles exceeding this height should advance to the A82 closure points where they will be stacked until the next available amnesty.
To help keep disruption to a minimum the A82 will remain open during the daytime; however, reduced speed limits will be in place and road users should drive with care as they will be running on a temporary road surface.
Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans and share information about the project in advance.
Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times. Local access for residents and scheduled bus services will be maintained as far as reasonably practicable.
Commenting on the improvements, Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This surfacing project on the A82 between Tyndrum and Ballachullish will help address any defects and improve the condition of the road for all users.
“The overnight closures are essential to ensure the safety of roadworkers due to the narrow width of the A82. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight.
“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance. We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
