Works start on Sunday 8 May for seven nights

• Overnight carriageway closures in place for safety, 7.30pm – 6.30am

Sections of the A96 in Aberdeen are to benefit from surfacing improvements, with works set to begin on Sunday 8 May at 7.30pm.

The improvements will address defects in the surface on the A96 eastbound and westbound carriageway at Auchmill Road, creating a safer and smoother road surface for motorists.

The project is expected to get underway on Sunday 8 May and is programmed to take place over seven nights with all works due to be completed by 6.30am on Monday 16 May, subject to weather conditions.

The works are programmed to take place as follows:

• Phase One – Sunday 8 May to Monday 9 May, 7.30pm – 6.30am (two nights)

The first phase of the project will involve teams resurfacing the eastbound carriageway. To ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as motorists, the A96 eastbound will be closed from Oldmeldrum Road. Eastbound traffic will be diverted along Old Meldrum Road, Muggiemoss Road to the A92 and then back onto the A96 at the Haudagain Roundabout.

• Phase Two – Tuesday 10 May to Wednesday 11 May, 7.30pm – 6.30am (two nights)

The second phase of the project will involve teams resurfacing the westbound carriageway. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the A96 will be closed westbound from the Haudagain Roundabout. Westbound traffic will be diverted along the A92 to Muggiemoss Road Roundabout, Muggiemoss Road, Oldmeldrum Road, the A947 and then back onto the A96 at Bucksburn Roundabout.

• Phase Three – Thursday 12 May to Friday 13 May, 7.30pm – 6.30am (two nights)

The third phase of the project will involve teams carrying out road marking improvements to the eastbound carriageway. To ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as motorists, the A96 eastbound will be closed from Oldmeldrum Road. Eastbound traffic will be diverted along Old Meldrum Road, Muggiemoss Road to the A92 and then back onto the A96 at the Haudagain Roundabout.

• Phase Four – Saturday 14 May to Sunday 15 May, 7.30pm – 6.30am (two nights)

The third phase of the project will involve teams carrying out road marking improvements to the westbound carriageway. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the A96 will be closed westbound from the Haudagain Roundabout. Westbound traffic will be diverted along the A92 to Muggiemoss Road Roundabout, Muggiemoss Road, Oldmeldrum Road, the A947 and then back onto the A96 at Bucksburn Roundabout.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the surfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Commenting on the improvements, Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “This surfacing project on the A96 at Auchmill Road will help address any defects and greatly improve the quality and safety of the westbound and eastbound carriageway for road users.

“The traffic management proposed is essential to the safety of our teams and motorists, however we have taken steps to minimise disruption by carrying out the works overnight and have programmed the works to take place in phases.
