OVERNIGHT WORKS ON THE A1 BETWEEN GLADSMUIR AND ABBOTSVIEW JUNCTIONS

August 22, 2024

  • Overnight carriageway closures 2 and 3 September 2024

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, is set to carry out essential works to reinstate two weather stations on the A1 on Monday 2 September and Tuesday 3 September.

The weather stations are crucial during winter to act as sensors for ice on the road surface, allowing BEAR Scotland to treat it swiftly and ensure the safety of road users.

A1 Gladsmuir southbound – Monday 2 September – The A1 will be closed southbound between Gladsmuir and Oaktree from 19:30 to 06:00 on Monday 2 September. A signed diversion will be in place from Gladsmuir Junction to Oaktree Junction via the B6363, A199 and B6471. This diversion will add approximately 0.3 miles and an additional three minutes to affected journeys.

A1 Oaktree to Gladsmuir northbound – Tuesday 3 September – The A1 will also be closed northbound between Abbotsview and Oaktree from 19:30 to 06:00 on Tuesday 3 September. A signed diversion will be in place from Abbotsview Junction to Oaktree Junction via the A199, adding approximately 0.2 miles and an additional two minutes to affected journeys.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “We thank road users in advance for their patience while we carry out these essential works. Both weather stations were removed to allow resurfacing schemes to be carried out earlier this year and they now must be reinstated prior to winter.

“Closures of the  A1 southbound and northbound are essential to ensure the safety of workers and road users. However, we’ve planned the diversions to minimise disruption.”

Emergency services will be given access throughout the works at all times.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Real time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland at www.traffic.gov.scot, or on X at @trafficscotland.

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
