There are 30 structural maintenance resurfacing schemes planned on South East trunk roads during the first quarter of 2025, on the M8, M9, M876, A1, A7, A68, A702 and A720. These will all be carried out under overnight road and carriageway closures, except for a major scheme on the M8 eastbound at Polkemmet, which will require four days of contraflow in late March.
Routine works including drainage investigations and improvements, vegetation clearance and fencing schemes are planned on the M9, M80, M876, A1 and A68. None of these will require road closures except for drainage investigation works on the A68 between Salters Road Junction and Pathhead from 27-30 January.
Bridges schemes are continuing at M8 Junction 3 eastbound off-slip over the A899 and Earlston Bridge on the A68. Occasional overnight closures may be required.
Works on Longacre Bridge on the M8, postponed in December due to adverse weather, are scheduled to be completed in early April, requiring a weekend contraflow between Junctions 5 and 6. Further details will be announced in due course.
Works to replace the lateral thrust bearings on the Forth Road Bridge will commence, however this is not expected to cause any significant disruption to traffic.
New traffic signals are being installed on the A702 near Hillend, footway improvements and pedestrian crossing upgrades are taking place on the A7 in Hawick, roadside improvements on the M9 and A985 ongoing, and a new footway/cycleway will be constructed in Melrose in March. New 20mph speed limits are also expected to be introduced in Langholm and Biggar.
