RESURFACING WORKS AT HERMISTON GAIT

June 5, 2024

RESCHEDULED WORKS: Two additional nights will be required to complete resurfacing at Hermiston Gait after works were postponed due to adverse weather.

On the nights of Wednesday 17 July and Thursday 18 July, Hermiston Gait Roundabout and the A720 westbound carriageway between Calder Junction and Gogar Roundabout will be closed. The slip road from the eastbound M8 onto the A720 westbound will remain open. Access will be available from Calder Junction to the M8 westbound and to the A720 westbound after Hermiston Gait. Diversion routes will be signposted from the M8 eastbound to and from the A720 eastbound, and from Calder Junction to and from Hermiston Gait Retail Park (see map here).

  • Overnight closures of A720 westbound 24 to 27 June 2024

  • Overnight closures of Hermiston Gait Roundabout 28 June to 9 July 2024

A twelve-night programme of overnight resurfacing works on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass at Hermiston Gait is set to begin on 24 June.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the works in two phases between the hours of 20:30 and 06:00 each night, with no works on Saturday or Sunday nights.

In the first phase, on the nights of Monday 24 June to Thursday 27 June, a section of the westbound A720 between Hermiston and Gogar will be resurfaced. The main carriageway of the westbound A720 will be closed from Calder to Gogar, however access to the westbound M8 will still be available from Calder Junction. There will be no access from the M8 to the westbound A720 – a diversion route to Gogar will be signposted via the A71 Calder Road, the B701 Broomhouse Road, Bankhead Drive, South Gyle Access and South Gyle Broadway (see Phase 1 diversion route map here).

In the second phase of works, on the nights of Friday 28 June to Tuesday 9 July (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights), Hermiston Gait Roundabout and the A720 westbound carriageway between Calder Junction and Gogar Roundabout will be closed. The slip road from the eastbound M8 onto the A720 westbound will remain open. Access will be available from Calder Junction to the M8 westbound and to the A720 westbound after Hermiston Gait. Diversion routes will be signposted from the M8 eastbound to and from the A720 eastbound, and from Calder Junction to and from Hermiston Gait Retail Park (see Phase 2 diversion route map here).

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and other relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s Southeast Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will address and repair defects in the road surface such as potholes and cracks, creating safer and smoother journeys for motorists.

“It is essential for the safety of the workforce that we close the carriageway during the works, however we’ve scheduled them during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.

“We thank road users in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these improvements.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website www.trafficscotland.org for up-to-date travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
