RESURFACING WORKS ON THE A702 SOUTH OF CAMBWELL JUNCTION

November 26, 2020

Overnight road closures 29 and 30 November

Two nights of resurfacing works on the A702 near Biggar are scheduled to begin on Sunday 29 November. These works were originally scheduled earlier this month but had to be postponed due to adverse weather.

The project will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface 1 km of carriageway south of Cambwell Junction, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as the travelling public, the A702 will be closed between Cambwell Junction and Biggar from 19:30 until 06:30 on the nights of 29 and 30 November.

A diversion route will be signposted between Melbourne Crossroads and the A702 north of Biggar, via the A721 and A72.  This diversion will add an estimated 9 miles and 13 minutes to affected journeys.

These resurfacing works are a part of a road safety improvement package, which will continue in December with the upgrade of signage and roadside safety barriers.

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and other relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans and share information about the project in advance.

Emergency services will be able to pass through at all times and local access for residents living within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government guidance, are in place to protect teams and ensure they remain safe on site.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help address the defects on this section of the A702, improving safety and ride quality for motorists.

“We thank road users and the local community in advance for their patience while we carry out this project. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
