REVISED SCHEDULE OF MAJOR WEEKEND BRIDGE WORKS ON THE M8

October 18, 2024

  • Works cancelled over weekend of 18-21 October 2024

  • Contraflow in place over weekend of 25-28 October 2024

  • Motorists warned to plan ahead and expect long delays

Major bridge works on the M8 have been postponed for the weekend of 18 to 21 October due to the inclement weather forecast, however motorists are reminded to plan ahead and expect long delays when works go ahead as planned on the weekend of 25 to 28 October.

Last weekend, Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland successfully refurbished and re-waterproofed the westbound half of Longacre Bridge, which carries the motorway over Craigens Road between Junctions 5 and 6.

To allow works to be completed to the eastbound half of the bridge, M8 traffic will be managed under a contraflow system affecting both directions between Junctions 5 and 6 between the hours of 20:30 on Friday 25 October to 06:00 on Monday 28 October.

Outwith this period, between now and completion of the works, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions but traffic will be directed to use the hard shoulder and nearside lane, with the offside lane being closed, with a temporary speed limit in place for the safety of motorists.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “These works are weather dependent and can’t go ahead this weekend due to forecast heavy rain, however we’re still aiming to complete the job next weekend as planned.

“The project is essential to ensuring that this motorway structure continues to provide a safe and reliable service for years to come.

“We thank motorists for their patience and understanding and recommend that they check the latest travel updates, plan ahead and allow extra travel time for their journeys during these works.”

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
