This week marks Scottish Apprenticeship Week which celebrates and encourages people to consider an apprenticeship as a valuable route to a successful career. This is the path chosen by Dylan, a Highways Apprentice from our South East Team, who was eager to gain hands-on experience in the field whilst studying for his degree.
What’s your name and current role?
My name is Dylan Clemison and I’m currently a Highways Apprentice within the South East Unit at BEAR Scotland.
What does your job entail?
I am part of the Asset Team. A typical day would see me carrying out inspections of the trunk roads within the South East network. We monitor the roads very closely to see if there are any issues which require our attention or immediate repairs. This can range from potholes to manholes or barriers.
What first interested you in engineering?
My interest in engineering first started back in high school. I really enjoyed the STEM subjects as there were plenty of practical elements involved!
What route did you take from school?
There was a focus on foundation apprenticeships at my high school. We were encouraged to arrange one as part of a module which was fantastic as I couldn’t wait to get out into the world and get some hands-on experience. This led me to where I am now.
How are you finding the apprenticeship process?
It has been a great experience so far. I’ve really enjoyed the practical experience and growing my understanding of engineering in the field has been very beneficial.
What would you say your best achievement is?
I’m very proud of getting through my units during college. As part of my Higher National Certificate (HNC) and apprenticeship, my college requires me to undertake remote classes one day per-week which has certainly had its challenges amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would have definitely pushed myself to take engineering and science as my key subjects in school!
