The third quarter of 2024 promises to be a busy time for maintenance and improvement on the trunk road network, with a number of major schemes in progress or due to commence.

A total of 25 resurfacing schemes are planned on routes across the network. Some of the most significant include on the A720 from Lothianburn to Straiton, the A702 south of Coulter and the M8 westbound at Harthill.

Road closures will be required to carry out these works, but they will be scheduled at night wherever possible to minimise disruption. The scheme on the M8 westbound at Harthill is likely to require some weekend restrictions – details will be confirmed in due course.

Major works are due to commence in September at Longacre Bridge east of M8 Junction 6, requiring some weekend restrictions, and on the bridge that carries the B792 over the M8 at Blackburn, requiring a number of overnight closures.

The ongoing projects to refurbish Westwater Bridge on the A702 and the bridge carrying the M8 Junction 3 eastbound off-slip over the A899 are also set to continue until later in the year.

Work to replace the architectural lighting on the Queensferry Crossing will continue throughout the quarter, as will the project to replace the Kincardine Bridge’s Southern Piled Viaduct and several maintenance projects on the Forth Road Bridge, however these are not expected to cause any significant disruption to road users.
