A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join BEAR Scotlands SE Operations team as a Highway Maintenance Operative.
The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. It includes routes such as the Edinburgh City Bypass, as well as a large section of the M8 connecting Edinburgh to Glasgow.
The Highway Maintenance Operative, reporting into the Operations Manager, should be an experienced roadworker with the necessary skills to carry out various road maintenance operations, training can be provided if necessary. Ideally you should be prepared to participate in our winter and emergency response service on a standby rota basis.
This is a full time role.
Role includes:
- The erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers (permanent signs and barriers).
- Hot material patching by hand.
- Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
- Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture.
- Operation of power tools, small plant and machinery.
- Driving vehicles including those with simple attachments such as tractors.
- Prepare written returns including fault report details.
- Provide support for specialist roadworkers.
- Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourself.
- Participating in standby and winter maintenance rota.
- Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and plough, operating winter maintenance vehicles and footway tractors
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- There is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the job.
- Knowledge of the requirement for Health and Safety rules and procedures.
- Physically fit for working in sometimes arduous conditions.
- Experience of using small plant.
- Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety an advantage.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Experience of working to tight deadlines and working under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Flexible to working practices.
- Ability to cope with change.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
