The Forth Road Bridge Doors Open Day 2024 took place on Saturday 28 September, attracting over 300 visitors and raising over £2,800 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The open day was organised by Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland – the third year in a row that they have staged the popular event.
This year’s open day formed part of a programme of celebrations led by Transport Scotland to celebrate the Forth Road Bridge’s 60th anniversary.
Guided tours of the bridge hosted by experienced members of staff departed every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping at points of interest along the bridge deck and visiting one of the main cable anchorages, normally hidden from public view. BEAR Scotland had received an overwhelming response to the offer of tours, with over 12,000 applications for 288 places.
The Forth Bridges Contact and Education Centre was open to the public, featuring competitions, a special exhibition for the bridge’ 60th anniversary, educational activities for children, and sales of Forth Bridges branded merchandise.
Visitors also had the chance to climb inside one of BEAR Scotland’s 32-tonne gritters and see the advanced technology that controls the release of salt and grit onto the road.
Gary McNaughton from Edinburgh was the lucky winner of a charity prize draw for a once-in-a-lifetime trip for two to the top of one of the Queensferry Crossing’s main towers.
All money raised at the event went to BEAR Scotland’s national charity partner of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. In total, £2,848 was raised.
Matt Smith, Macmillan Relationship Fundraising Manager, said: “We are so grateful to have been chosen as BEAR Scotland’s national charity partner and be part of their amazing Doors Open Day Event.
“The money raised on the day and throughout the partnership will allow us to continue investing in our vital services and ensure everyone with cancer knows where to turn to get the help they need.”
BEAR Scotland’s South East Operating Company Representative, Andy Thompson, said: “We were delighted to welcome the public to the Forth Road Bridge again on this special 60th anniversary year.
“It’s very rewarding for us to share our passion for maintaining this iconic structure.
“Our thanks go to all who attended and helped to raise money for such a deserving cause.”
